Dining spaces have long been a gathering place for families, friends, communities, and company; whether brunching in style with others or having a familiar meal alone, the table provides a place to nourish our bodies and warm our hearts. With the increasing coldness of autumn’s nights come holiday meals and family favorites. When it comes to furnishing your dining spaces, there are many popular styles from which to choose.
Baroque, Rococo, and Gothic
Sponsored by the Roman Catholic Church, Baroque’s themes were religious, political, and quite serious. Artists and architects employed exaggerated motion and clear detail that could be easily interpreted by the masses. Symmetry was a focus of Baroque.
Rococo is an artistic movement from the 18th Century that influenced everything from architecture to interior design. Creamy pastels and soft colors are characteristic of the period. Cabinetmakers often utilized playful approaches, graceful curves, asymmetry, and decadent gilding. Late Baroque is another name for Rococo because it follows Baroque chronologically. If Baroque represents the reserved, serious half of the 18th Century, then Rococo is its younger, lighter side.

Traditional Dining Spaces
Tables are standard pieces for dining rooms. Traditional dining tables are made from wood materials like oak, mahogany, cherry, ash, and any more others in various combinations. Look for round, ovular, and rectangular shapes. Round and oval-shaped tables usually rest atop singular pedestals, whereas rectangular and square-shaped tables often feature four legs in each of the corners. Accompanying chairs are generally made from complimentary materials and similar construction methods.

Contemporary and Casual Spaces
Modern designs feature functionality and comfort. Contemporary styles offer dining sets in many different forms and variations. Glass, metal, and wood are common motifs in contemporary dining rooms and restaurants. Casual dining rooms are those that prioritize comfort and simplicity. Avoid extravagance with casual materials like wicker for example. Casual dining sets are common to lofts, breakfast nooks, and other places to grab a quick bite.
