18th-century Paris saw the birth of Rococo style during the reign of King Louis XV of France. It happened in response to the strict and symmetrical demands made by Baroque style and its sponsor, the Roman Catholic Church. Also known as “Late Baroque,” Rococo has affected virtually every facet of the art world including furniture, interior design, cabinetmaking, woodworking, sculpture, architecture, decoration, painting, literature, theatre, music, and so on. MBW Furniture carries a vast selection of furniture and décor in the Rococo style.

Employing creamy pastels and similar shades, Artisans and woodworkers applied graceful, almost playful, approaches to their creative endeavors. They traded the stodgy, political themes of Baroque for Rococo’s jovial, wit-filled motifs. Lavish in its own right, Rococo style boasts asymmetry, curves, and golden decadence.

Rooms and design spaces of this era were typically crafted as one total work of art, greater than the sum of its parts. Interior decorators favored elaborate furniture, statuettes, sculptures, mirrors, paintings, and lush tapestries. Ornate cabinetry was extremely popular during the Rococo period. While altars, pulpits, and confessionals were the largest pieces made, the most popular Rococo furniture of our time includes dressers, commodes, consoles, and dining sets.

Rococo style is characterized by an affinity for shells, scrolls, and wave-like motifs. In fact, even the name is considered a combination of the French rocaille (shell) and Italian barocco (Baroque). Rococo paintings could be categorized as erotic, sentimental, or pastoral. Some common motifs are flora and fauna, nature, acanthus leaves, masks, the grotesque, professional badges, paintings, and precious gemstones.

If Baroque represents the reserved, serious half of the 18th Century, then Rococo is its younger, lighter side. With Rococo’s asymmetry and the symmetry of Baroque, the two periods effectively constitute the “yin and yang” of 18th-century decorative arts. Rococo style was short-lived as the simplicity of neoclassical culture and Voltaire’s influential philosophies emerged around 1760.
