Among the most popular types of decorative lighting, chandeliers began as grandiose candleholders as early as the Middle Ages. Back then they were less decorative and much more practical. Early versions of chandeliers were rough, wooden crosses with spikes for securing candles. Despite its many faces and homes throughout the world, the chandelier has always offered overhead lighting via matchless style.
Almost always a hanging light fixture, modern chandeliers typically contain standard light bulbs or electric candles for effect; however, there are many traditionally crafted chandeliers that utilize wax candles for old-fashioned appeal or rustic design spaces. Some popular contemporary examples are pendant, cluster, crystal, bead-shell, metal, antler, candle, and Murano glass chandeliers.

European churches, abbeys, castles, and aristocratic homes were among the first design spaces with overhead illumination. Like most technological advances, chandeliers were first available to the wealthy and socially elite. The word, chandelier, entered French usage in the 10th Century (chandelabre), Spanish usage in the 12th Century, and English usage in the 14th Century.
The next time you have access to art, especially paintings, from the 15–17th Centuries, observe how many pieces contain curly-armed, brass chandeliers. Members of the rising merchant class and many modest homes, at that point in history, generally had practical chandeliers at the very least. Eventually artisans and craftspeople began styling chandeliers in the mode of crown jewels and other precious jewelry.

The advent of glassmaking in the 18th Century ensured that chandeliers of the time were dripping with light-refracting shards of every imaginable shape, size, and color. Once electricity became the new norm for interior lighting, chandeliers lost their appeal for a few centuries. The end of the 20th Century saw a revival of chandeliers when designers began utilizing them for decorative lighting with a touch of historical elegance.
