Artisans and cabinetmakers across the globe employ Suar when sculpting, carving, and building furniture and accessories. Widespread throughout the world, the hardwood is known to adapt quickly in new environments. In fact it grows and spreads so rapidly that it is considered invasive in many countries (e. g. Figi).
Saman Samanea (Suar) is native to South America, but grows throughout the tropics. Hawaii, Latin America, Thailand, and Indonesia are also home to Suar. The wood is also called “Rain Tree” and “Monkey Pod.” The leafy branches create a canopy and cooled, protective environment for the soil below. The tree also produces edible seeds that naturally enrich soils.

The wood is sturdy with interlocking straight grains, frequently with ribbon-like figures and somewhat coarse textures. Suar’s crisscross grain lends toughness to home furnishings, whereas the multicolored features of the wood inspire artists to create exquisite sculptures and unique handicrafts.

Suar wood is durable, decay resistant, and resilient in dry climates, but it must be long dried and kiln-dried before becoming furniture. A favorite for various woodworking projects, it is often compared to other hardwoods like Black Walnut. Modern builders also use it as a substitute for rare mahogany, which is becoming increasingly expensive.
As with any durable wood, it will last even longer with proper care and maintenance. Dust is a major enemy of any fine furniture, so use wood oil and soft cloths to ensure longevity. Dry dusting is never a good idea because it almost guarantees unsightly scratching. Avoid damaging alkaline soaps as well when cleaning wood. Suar furniture is incredibly beautiful, strong, and long lasting as long as it is treated with care.
