For years now Art Deco has influenced most aspects of art and design including architecture, fashion, jewelry, aesthetic art like painting or sculpture, as well as industrial and interior design. The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco as well as the Chrysler Building, Rockefeller Center, and the Empire State Building in New York City all represent Art Deco.

The style went global during the 1930s, entering the World War II era; it was named after a Parisian exhibition’s title by the same name: “Les Années 25,” subtitled, “Art Deco.” American experts—members from the American Institute of Architecture, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The New York Times—were sent to the 1925 French exposition at Le Musee des Arts Decoratifs to be inspired. Soon thereafter American Art Deco became a reality, and it has been around since its inception.

Patricia Bayer describes Art Deco as “an architecture of ornament, geometry, energy, retrospection, optimism, color, texture, light and at times even symbolism.” Embodying glamor, elegance, practicality, and modernity, Art Deco contrasts its predecessor, Art Nouveau: deco style shifted from Nouveau’s asymmetrical organic curves to Deco’s characteristically symmetrical geometric lines and symmetry.

The style is informed by modernism, neoclassicism, Russian constructivism, cubism, and Italian futurism. The Egyptian and Aztec cultures also influenced Art Deco. Popular Art Deco themes include trapezoidal, zigzagged, geometric, and jumbled shapes as well as stepped forms. Artisans use materials like aluminum, stainless steel, lacquer, chrome, and inlaid wood. Chevron patterns, ziggurat shapes, fountains, and sunbursts are typical deco motifs.

Historians attribute World War I’s imposed severity to the style’s ornamental nature and break from the norm. The United States employed Art Deco as the theme of all railway stations during the 1930s to signify the railroad’s efficiency and modernity. F. Scott Fitzgerald said that the style originated from “all the nervous energy stored up and unexpended in the War.” Art Deco is truly a unique style that spans several decades.
