Harvested for construction since the prehistoric era by natives of the Caribbean as well as Central and South America, mahogany is a name often given to several tropical hardwoods from around the world; however, three species of the famous reddish-brown timber are truly mahogany, and they are indigenous to the Americas. Mahogany has always been a rarity, originally thanks to geography and lately due to endangerment.

Mahogany’s coloring is diverse. It can be varying shades of yellow, pink, or salmon when first chopped. Given enough time, the wood’s color transitions as it darkens to deep, luscious reds and earthy browns. With a fine to medium texture, mahogany has a generally straight (sometimes wavy) grain and is usually free of voids and pockets.

The durable wood has excellent workability, a fact that has ensured mahogany’s popularity among cabinetmakers and consumers for centuries. Its sturdy hardwood structure guarantees strength and stability. Beyond naturally darkening over time, furniture crafted from mahogany polishes to a brilliant luster, displaying a reddish sheen.

17th-century buccaneer John Esquemeling made note of Hispaniola (Caribbean island that contains present-day Haiti and Dominican Republic) natives making canoes without iron tools by burning mahogany trees at the root and carving out the resulting log. Spanish colonization brought the coveted wood to Europe. Historians speculate that some mahogany even traveled to France from the island after the establishment of Saint Domingue, a French colony that eventually became modern Haiti.

Much of the furniture constructed in the American colonies during the 18th Century was made of mahogany since it was readily available to craftsmen. Globalization definitely made mahogany easier to attain for a while, but over-harvesting has ensured the wood’s rare status once again. For this reason, harvest has slowed for Cuban, Honduran, and Brazilian mahogany. It is listed as a threatened species in Costa Rica and in the United States’ CITES Appendix III (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). Still used to craft fine furniture, mahogany is truly an earthly treasure and should be treated thusly.
